These are the retail version of our 2008 Geocoin Poker Challenge playing chips. Each year we sponsor a Geocoin poker tour called the
Geocoin Poker Challenge which makes stops at many of the biggest Geocaching events in the country. This year there are 3 scheduled stops with a 4th being worked on.
Sales of this coin help defray the cost of putting on the GPC Tour including travel expenses for our tournament director, shipping costs for the playing supplies, etc. which add up to almost $700 per stop.
During a tournament session, 40 players are selected from a list of interested players to compete for their share of a huge coin jackpot. Each contestant contributes 3 Geocoins to the prize pot. In exchange when they sit down they receive a special edition trackable version of this coin. Their version is silver and has color glitter enamel based on the stop location. The Geowoodstock VI stop had gold glitter since its theme was based on the goldrush, the Midwest Geobash 2008 stop will have green glitter since its mascot is a parrot, and the Geocoin Fest 2008 stop will have silver glitter since it is being held in the city of steel.
There are also a large set of non-trackable play chips which are not for sale. This coin is a trackable version of that chip. At the final table, when only 8 of the 40 players remain, all poker chips are taken off the table and contestants play the final table with a set of actual metal poker chips. These chips are used at every stop in 2008 and then become part of the prize booty in 2009 when a new 2009 set of table chips is made for use at the final table.
