December 2019 - Caching Creed / Indomitable Spirit

When we hear the words "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." we often immediately picture the faithful US postal worker making their deliveries in awful weather.  What most people don't know is that it's not the official creed of the USPS, but instead a loose translation of a writing describing an ancient postal service from around 500 BC.   The Greek scholar Herodotus was quite impressed with the efficiency of the Persian Empire during their war with the Greeks.  He exclaimed "There is nothing in the world which travels faster than the Persian couriers" while describing their relay system of delivery.  

Well I rather like that quote.  Since it's not an official USPS creed or even a direct translation of Herodotus, I decide to alter it further to describe this merry band of cachers I find myself surrounded by constantly.  Nothing slows them in their pursuit of the next cache.  Snow?... yep, no problem.  Flooding?... sure, why not.  Desert sun?... sure, grab the sunscreen!  This is a pretty great group to spend time with and brave new trials alongside.

I do feel it's important to give credit where credit is due however and so on the face of this coin, we see the Manticore, the symbol for the ancient Persian Royal Post overlaying architectural influences of Persian design and the symbols the elements we dare to find those caches!  Sun or moon will light our path and rain or snow will slack our thirst, but we won't stop the hunt!

On the reverse side is displayed the earth enveloped by the world serpent of time and further by cachers of all ages, genders, abilities and species on the hunt.  No terrain is off limits, no disability can stop them, the spirit of the geocacher is indeed a formidable force. The world awaits for those who seek to explore it!
