Unlike a sundial that uses shadows, this timepiece projects gathered light onto the circumference marks to give a reading. By facing south and tilting approximately 45 degrees toward the horizon, light gathers within the gem and is focused in a beam across the outer rim of the coin on the face side of the coin. On the reverse side we see the tools of father time as we pass slowly into the new year as our times runs out. He will cut short the life of the new year with his measures and scythe before ushering in a fresh year with it's traditional greeting flying high.
