November 2018 - Thread of Fate
Design notes from Chris: So I (re)discovered an obscure image I had saved for investigating for the possibility of a future coin and started doing a bit of research. I was quickly delighted to learn the amazing story of the Death's Head Hawk Moth. There are actually 3 known species and they're named after ancient references to death and fate in ancient Greek mythology. These macabre night fliers, dressed in a variety of horrific skull depictions, are both wondrous and death defying in their own right. They are masters of camouflage among the insect world and can copy-cat pheromones of various colonies and species of honey bees to stealthily make their way right into an active hive to steal away a haul of rich honey and sneak away again before discovery. This is remarkable because even rival honey bees can't pull off camouflage of this caliber. When agitated they can produce a loud screech to intimidate or ward off enemies as well. They're clever, great at camouflage and live their short lives in a fury of activity sneaking in and out of hiding holes. Not entirely unlike active cachers!
