August 2021 - Summer Nights Caching

A few years back, my niece from Montana came to visit in the summer and do a bit of caching in the northeast U.S. We hit a Mega event, cached in numerous states in New England, and came back to relax for a couple days in Pennsylvania. We had a great time, but night caches were a whole new experience, and the moment became particularly memorable for her when she discovered fireflies (aka Lightning Bugs, Fire Beetles, Glow Worms, Glow Flies, Moon Bugs, Golden Sparklers or Fire Devils). I was stunned to realize she'd never experienced the magic of fireflies while caching in the late hours since it has become such a norm for us in warmer climates. She was fascinated to find that "they're real and not just in stories!" and we were smiling to relive vicariously the discovery of something truly magical in nature.
Our annual pilgrimage to one of our favorite Mega Events that specializes in night caching and capering about in the woods surrounded by these beautiful flying lanterns was cut short this year due to the pandemic. While reminiscing over old photos, caching finds and our favorite DNFs (always far more amusing in their typical disastrous style) I recalled that moment of magic. In lieu of attending our usual Mega, we're getting packed to go make the pilgrimage anyway and find some night caches to keep the tradition alive. Maybe we'll get lucky and spend some time among the fireflies celebrating our fun in the great outdoors at night. Maybe they'll shed a little magic and light on our summer. Maybe we'll set one of these coins free to travel and remind our fellow cachers of the magic of Summer Nights Caching!
