December 2021 - Glückpilz
Design notes from the artist: Chris Mackey
After two months in a row of macabre skulls, figured I'd go a lighter hearted route for the next one. I'd always seen little ornaments around the holidays of red mushrooms and I've seen them as ornaments on trees, but never knew what it was about. Apparently, it's a token of good luck for the holidays and beginning of a new year. It originated in pre-germanic northern europe and spread from there. The little red mushroom is the equivalent of a horseshoe, four leaf clover, etc. as a charm/blessing and it's traditional to give little carved tokens as gifts of benediction. There's a connection to little folk and chimney sweeps as lucky omens that I'm still reading into.
