September 2021 - Harvest Caching
Design notes from the artist: Chris Mackey
The September coin design depicts the fall equinox and its pivotal moment is the perfect time for caching. Septem is the Latin root word for "Seven" and the basis of our current word for September. It was the seventh month of the ancient world's calendar where people harvest and reap the rewards for a hard year's work. It marks the time of year when the days pass through the equinox and the growing season ends as the night takes over from the sun as the greater portion of the day as we head into the coming winter months. The birds gorge themselves on grain in preparation for their migrations, the grains of the field are reaped in their fullness. The leaves shed their green coats to reveal their true jewel colors and begin to blanket the earth in preparation and insulation against the snow to come.
It's the perfect time for longer hikes with lower temperatures, lower humidity, fewer biting bugs, more active wildlife cycles and the peak of all fruitful growth. It's time to lace on those long hiking boots and hit those trails we might have been avoiding due to busy summer schedules, overwhelming heat and long work hours. It's time to pull in the harvest... of caches. New caches have been waiting for these cooler days and long trail explorations. Let's get outside and explore before the winter closes in and the caches are blanketed until next spring!
