August 2024 - Eye of Horus
Design notes from the artist: Chris Mackey
The Eye of Horus, also known as the Wedjat Eye, is one of the oldest symbols of protection on earth. From the Nile Valley, it spread across the world - a symbol of the constant battle between order and chaos and the struggle between one's base wants against our higher divine nature.
Often confused with the Eye of Ra, the Eye of Horus is depicted as a left eye, often shown with a blue iris. The falcon-headed god presided over the sun and sky looking down on his subjects with keen attention. He was the center of many legendary tales, the most prominent being his epic battle with his uncle, Set, who murdered his father. During this battle his eye is torn asunder and cast down to be broken into six pieces. The six pieces would eventually be collected together by other protector gods and goddess and mended into a powerful talisman known as the Wedjat Eye, by the healer goddess Thoth who oversaw the restoration. This symbol would come to be universally known as a talisman for protection, healing, and wholeness. It would be used as a basis for math, medicine, and the sciences.
This coin pays tribute to the ancient tale of this symbol that has persevered for eons. From the lotus symbolizing creation under the rising sun, to the scarab beetle symbolizing the return to the grave under the setting moon before rebirth, from the pantheon of order and greater good, to the symbols of luck, strength, and abundance, this is a talisman for the ages. Carry this token of goodwill for yourself or gift it to a friend who is truly deserving of protection under the Eye of Horus.
