February 2025 - Cave Caching
Design notes from the artist: Chris Mackey
If you've never found a cache in a cave, then this is one challenge you'll definitely want to add to your bucket list! I remember my first time like it was yesterday. Fumbling through the dark passageway and then getting down onto the floor to scoop away gravel from the tiny opening into the next chamber and then letting out all my breath to collapse my chest just enough to squeeze through. For someone with a bit of an issue with claustrophobia from getting stuck in an underground pipe at a construction site as a child, this was a big one for me. Now, I would go well out of my way to experience the sound of a cache popping open deep underground.
Geocaches are finding their ways into more and more remote and amazing places around the world and caves are no exception. With advances in mapping, underground navigation, and spelunking equipment, safely exploring these remote locales is more accessible than ever. If you're prepared to face the challenge with the right gear and some helpful hands, I highly recommend considering testing yourself. If you've already done so, then this might be the coin for you. If you haven't, this might be the reminder to keep stretching your wings. Explore Your World every day... above and below!
